Thirukkarambanoor (Uthamar Koil)
Sri Purushothaman

Uthamar koil temple
Sri Purushothaman Perumal temple

Thirukkarambanoor , also known as Uthamar koil or Pichaandar koil is a divya desam 8 kms near Trichy and about 4 kms from SriRangam. In this temple, Lord Narayanan, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma known as "Mummoorthigal" (The Holy Trinity) are seen together in one temple in separate sannadhis. Sriman Narayanan is named as "Uthamar" and Lord Parameswaran is named as "Pikshandanar".

The legend behind the temple is that Paramewaran (Shiva) plucked the fifth head of Brahma and hence was cursed with Brhamahathi dosham. The skull of Brahma was stuck in his hand and could not get rid of it. As per his curse ,unless he filled the skull with rice by way of alms, he will not be able to get rid of the skull. He went around asking for 'bikshai' ( begging for food) and it never got filled. He approached Lord Vishnu and Mahalakshmi filled the kabalam (skull) with rice and got filled. As he went around asking for bikshai, He is also called as 'Pikshandavar'.However, the skull stuck to his hand did not fall off. Lord Narayana asked him to go to ThiruKandiyur to completely get rid of the curse. Hence Shiva went to Thiru Kandiyur to Kamala pushkarani.

The temple has separate sannidhis(shrines) for Purushotamar, Bikshadanar, Brahma and their respective consorts Poornavalli, Soundaraya Parvathi and Saraswathi. This is one of the rare temples in the world, where the 'mummoorthigal' (the Holy Trinity) are worshipped with their consorts within the same temple complex. Vishnu in the form of Purushottamar is in pujanga sayanam (reclining posture) with chakra (discus) in one hand. The vimana(roof) of the central sannithi is called Udhyoga Vimana. The sannidhi of Bhikshadanar is located in the same sannidhi behind to that of Purushottamar and is in the form of lingam.

Doing pooja using Nagalinga flower (Couroupita guianensis) or Canonball tree (the hooded flowers look like hooded cobra) here is said to eradicate our problems in life.

There are sannidhis for Ganesha, Rama,Varadarajar, Shani bhagwan,Natarajar , Anjaneya and Azhwars.
