Sri Avinashiappar - Tiruppukkozhiyur (Avinashi)
Avinashi Shiva Temple dedicated to Shiva is located at Avinashi, Tamil Nadu at a distance of 40 kms from Coimbatore and 10 kms from Tiruppur . This is also known as Tiruppukkozhiyur, Karunaiyaaththaal Temple, Avinasilingeswarar temple and Avainasiappar .This is one of the Thevara Padal Petra Sthalams revered by Sundarar. Thirumoolar and Manickavachagar.The original complex is believed to have been built by Chola kings and later some of the structures by Madurai Nayakars during the 16th century.
Avinashi-Lingeshwarar temple is considered as holy as Varanasi. It is also called as Dakshina Kasi .
The temple is situated in a massive layout with two main Gopurams and several sannidhis.
Avinasin in sanskrit means indestructible. As per legend, two young boys bathing in a pond when a crocodile swallowed one of them. The mother of the boy pleaded to saint Sundarar to rescue his child and said that she was planning to do Upanayanam to the child when this incident happened. Sundarar, who was travelling by that way heard the incident and sung praises of Shiva in the temple. The boy miraculously came out the crocodile clutches and this event is commemorated during the Mudalai Vaai Pillai Utsavam on Panguni Uththiram in the temple. There is a sannidhi to Sundarar on the banks of the temple tank and a mural depicting this .
Festivals
Apart from the daily ritual poojas that are performed four times a day,there are weekly rituals like somavaram and sukravaram, fortnightly rituals like pradosham and monthly festivals like amavasai (new moon day), pournami (full moon day), kiruthigai and sathurthi.The most prominent festival of the temple, Thaipoosam, is celebrated for ten days during the month of Thai (mid January). The utsavar (festival deity) of Avinashi lingeswarar and his consorts circumambulate the temple and the streets in the village in different temple cars. The festival ends with Theerthavari on the last day. During the Tamil month of Vaikasi (Oct-Nov), Tirukalyanam, Ambal Tapasu festivals are celebrated.
Temple Timings It is normally open from 5 am – 12:00pm and 4.30pm- 8:00pm.
How to reach?The temple is located at 50 Kms from Copimbatore and 14 kms from Tirupur, Plenty of local buses,cabs and auto rickshaws are available from Coimbatore and Tirupur.
